Franne Dickinson paints with a strong reverence for the French Post-impressionists. Everything that catches her artistic eye, from flower-filled vases to Parisian market scenes are all filled with an expressive and abundant colorful energy.

Franne's vibrant representational style of painting and drawing is derived from a broad background in both the visual and the performing arts. She likes to work fast and with bright, natural color.

Each of Franne's paintings features a color surprise, as Franne explains, "In every great painting there is one color, without which, the whole thing would be different."

Franne says music is also an important factor in her painting process. She usually starts a studio session listening to Mozart, "...very conducive to painting and to moving from myself to being conscious of myself in another zone." Franne also enjoys the music of Charles Trenet, a French café singer, delighted to work to the sound of his voice. It's not surprising that Franne's paintings are naturally rhythmic.

She explains, "It's the gesture of the line that creates the rhythm of the painting."

Franne's attraction to capturing and creating vibrant patterns is also responsible for much of the rhythm found in her work. She can depict an existing pattern from cloth or imaginatively enhance it to suit her needs.

Literature, theater, and dance also serve as an inspiration to Franne Dickinson. She majored in literature at the University of Illinois, and only discovered her passion for painting after arriving in Door County more than twenty years ago.

Franne began exploring visual art as a student at the Peninsula Art School. Years later she teaches there, integrating a variety of different art forms in a sequence of classes that seek to merge dance, theater, and poetry with visual art.
Dickinson comes to this wholistic perspective as an experienced actress, performing in what she calls "little theater" for over thirteen years. She finds the drama on stage and the drama on canvas to have much in common.

Franne explains, "The interplay of actors on stage is exactly the same as the interplay between color, the line, the gesture, and the reaction of one color to another." Each year she teaches at least one course that combines poetry and art...

Winters will usually find Franne and her husband, Duane escaping Door County for a time to explore the world from France to Mexico. They cover the USA from Atlanta to Maine to keep in touch with their children. Although Franne is a world traveler with a deep affection for France she says Door County will always be her home.
